Shreemandira motif woven using traditional Chiari.
Once a crown jewel in Odisha’s textile heritage, the Rangani community and its exquisite Dhalapathara weaves were synonymous with bridal opulence. From the late 1800s to the mid-1900s, these handwoven masterpieces commanded attention among buyers and connoisseurs all over the country.
Crafted by skilled Rangani weavers, who mastered the art of making distinctive patterns and colours that would stand out, Dhalapathara weaves are devoid of intricate machinery. In fact there is no Jaala, Jaqaurd, or Dobby employed in loom setting. Instead, they boast a unique technique involving hand-spun, and naturally dyed threads. Renowned for their vibrant contrasts and captivating motifs like Kusumi Kapta, Kankana Pedi, Nabagunjara, etc, these weaves were once the epitome of luxury. Now limited to just a handful of families keeping their heritage and tradition alive.
